Week 1, day 3: Why the Department of Homeland Security won’t protect us from bad guys over the internet

Back in November, 2000, before there was a Department of Homeland Security, I called the FBI to report a cybersecurity incident and I had to explain what the internet was to the dispatcher who answered the phone. Here is the link I mentioned in the video with details.

I’m sure by now, everyone at the FBI knows what the internet is, but for lots of reasons, the government is not in a position to protect us from cyberattacks. We, the people, are the last and best hope for internet safety, and in today’s interconnected world, the personal responsibility we all learned in sixth grade civics applies now more than ever.
