Vineeta wanted to know how the public can protect its information after somebody stole around 3 TB of data about millions of Americans from United Health Group earlier this year. I’ll put together a blog post about the data breach and link to it here. The short answer is, individually, not much. It’s not like we can un-steal all that information. Bad guys are already trading it. Collectively, we can fix a fundamentally broken system to make these sensational data breaches less of a big deal. Here’s a proposal. Maybe when we’re tired enough of the status-quo, we’ll decide we want to do something about it. Maybe the United Health Group breach will be a catalyst.
My best advice for now? Same as always. Care and share to be prepared. Here’s a 2022 presentation to the cybersecurity community about sharing.
