Email from Facebook automation that Facebook had disappeared me.

On Nov. 5, 2025, shortly after midnight, I replied to a friend’s Facebook post. My friend was worried that somebody had hijacked their Facebook account. I offered a reply. Had I known that Facebook automation would disappear me for my trouble, I probably would have stayed silent. How’s that for self-censorship? Here’s what I said.

Good luck getting anyone at Facebook to help. What exactly happened?

Ah…

> Hey, all–Someone is trying to impersonate me with friend requests.
> I’m not sure how to report this, but I’m gonna find out ASAP. And if
> you get a weird request, please report it as well. Thanks much!

That does not necessarily mean somebody got inside your Facebook account. Impersonations happen all the time. Somebody grabs a few pictures and makes a fake profile with your name and then solicits your friends for money. If you see a fake friend request from an imposter, you can click a button to report it.

Facebook has been pretty good about getting rid of fake profiles – but sometimes overeager. So, the risk when reporting it is, Facebook might zap your profile instead of your imposter.

Here is a screen shot of my Facebook comment with identifying information for everyone besides me bleeped out.

My comment that made cheap Facebook automation "think" I did something bad with cybersecurity. I think. Facebook never told me. But this came in right after my comment.

That link in my comment points to a blog post about another friend who persuaded the Illinois Attorney General to intercede with Facebook and restore their profile.

A few seconds after I posted that reply, an email came in that Facebook had suspended my account because I violated cybersecurity community standards. At first, I thought it was well-timed phishing. So, I checked the email header – it really did come from Facebook. And then I checked my Facebook browser tab and saw an ugly page that Facebook really had suspended my account. Poof – all posts, pictures, comments, everything I had poured in there since 2009, gone in a flash. Nobody could find me because I no longer existed in the Facebook universe.

I should have grabbed a screen shot, but I let my emotions rule. This bothered me way more than it should have. Now, I can empathize with others in the same predicament.

I could appeal by clicking the “appeal” button, but if Facebook denied my appeal, I could not appeal again and my account would disappear forever. Nothing to lose. I was already a nonperson. So, I appealed and went to bed, waiting for the Facebook automation overlords to rule.

Yep, I submitted an appeal to the Facebook automation higher authority.

I woke up after sunrise and saw a 4 a.m. email that the Facebook automation overlords ruled in my favor. Sure enough, I was back.

And the supremely wise Facebook automation gave me back my social status.

I’ve heard people complain about social media liberal or conservative bias, depending on what they said before the platform disappeared them. I still don’t buy it. The problem is not political bias. The problem is cheap AI that doesn’t know enough about context, and developers who don’t seem to care. Because social media users are not customers. We’re raw material.

But anyway, now that I’m back, time for some brown-nosing just in case. Did I say, “Facebook automation overlords” above? Please forgive me. I should have said, “Facebook supreme wisdom.” Thank you for restoring my place in society. I promise to behave according to Facebooks’ benevolent rules from now on. Mark Z, have I ever told you how great that curly hair looks? Dude, do you work out or what?

I know this blog post lives on my website, that I control, so I can say anything I want here. But social media reaches everywhere. Facebook might still find it. Can’t be too careful these days. We must all strive to keep the Facebook automation overlords happy.

Gag.

Beyond satire, the truth is, Facebook users really do have power, but only if two billion Facebook users stand together. Which is unlikely. I left this feedback for the automation to digest. Maybe somebody will see it and care.

So I left some feedback.

But wait – this gets even better.

After the Facebook automation overlords restored me, naturally I put together a Facebook post about my experience as a rough draft for this blog post. All my Facebook posts are wide-open to the public, and so it didn’t take long for a bunch of cheap AI bots to offer me fake help to solve my already-solved problem.

Here they are. I’ve never met any of these people – although I doubt they’re real people.

My experience leads to a few modern day life lessons.

  • Build your reputation in the real world, outside social media.
  • We really are social media raw material, not customers. Don’t count on any support from anyone.
  • Use social media with your eyes open. Post copies of your good stuff if you want, but keep the real copies of your good stuff somewhere you control. Which reminds me – I should download copies of my videos I streamed to my Youtube channel.
  • If you’re an author like me, then put your good stuff on your author website and advertise it on your favorite social media platform.
  • Don’t trust anyone’s AI as any ultimate source of truth.

This is not the first time that I’ve triggered a cheap AI algorithm. I doubt it will be the last. If you’re following me on a social media channel and I suddenly disappear, check back here, on my blog, on my website, that I control. Maybe leave a comment to help alleviate my loneliness.
