When Bishop Mariann Budde appealed to newly elected President Trump for compassion, Trump didn't like it. Neither did lots of other right wingers.

In Matthew 22:36-40, New International Version, Jesus makes a case for compassion. We should maybe consider listening more closely.

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

During a prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral the day after the Trump inauguration, Bishop of Washington, Mariann Budde, appealed to President Trump for compassion.

“In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy on the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families, some who fear for their lives.”

She continued: “The vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away, and that you help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome here.”

Trump reacted on Truth Social:

“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart…. She and her church owe the public an apology!”

Senator Tommy Tuberville said, “For this Bishop to do this to President Trump after a weekend of… talking about God more than ever, talking about how he was spared to give an opportunity maybe to change this country back to something that should be — it just absolutely amazes me how far these people go.”

Sean Hannity said, “She made the service about her very own deranged political beliefs with a disgraceful prayer full of fear-mongering and division.”

Laura Ingraham said, “Expect more of these radicals camouflaging themselves in clerical robes.”

Georgia Republican Representative Mike Collins tweeted, “The person giving this sermon should be added to the deportation list.”

Other Republicans offered similar reactions.

Budde was born in New Jersey in 1959. She is a U.S. citizen.
